Remember when "sleep tight and don't let the bed bugs bite" was just a cute bedtime expression that didn't mean anything? Well, those days are over. After 6 decades of living largely bed bug-free, the US is facing a national infestation.
In fact, the incidence of bed bug infestation has risen 500% in the last few years alone, and they're not just in dirty hotels – they’re at the 5-star ones as well and swarming the public places you visit every day. Bed bugs are shutting down businesses and being found at your local movie theaters and clothing stores as they inch closer and closer to your home.
Outbreaks of these teeny, blood-sucking critters have been reported in every kind of neighborhood in every state across the country, and that means you're at risk right now. Here's what you need to know to truly sleep tight at night – and not fear going out during the day.
Things That Go Bite in the Night
Bed bugs are insects that rely on the blood of humans or animals to survive. As babies, they are tiny as pinheads. A full-grown adult that's been making a nightly meal of you can balloon to the size of Lincoln's head on the penny. These little parasites are nocturnal and hate light, so they wait until the dark to creep out for their meals, which is why it can take so long to discover you've been sharing your home with them.
Making a Meal Out of You
Bed bugs hunt for a bare patch of skin and then hunker down to fill up before dawn. Someone who has a serious infestation could be bitten as many as 500 times per night. More often, you might see several bites clustered in one spot. Doctors call this "breakfast, lunch, and dinner," because the bugs are cramming all their meals into a short span of time. You will likely call it a very itchy rash, because the saliva of bed bugs causes an allergic reaction in many people. Though some people have no response, others can develop asthma, or in very rare cases, life-threatening anaphylactic shock.

Household Toxins
Children are at highest risk from the effects of toxins, but others at high risk include the elderly, pregnant women, those with chronic disease in any organ, cancer patients and those with allergies, migraines and asthma. The remainder of the population is also at risk when exposed to chemicals on a daily basis in their homes.
Most of us assume that if products are sold in stores, they are safe; and that our government has laws to protect us against harmful products. But, unfortunately, most of the chemicals in ordinary products that we use or are exposed to every day have not been tested for safety. What's worse, for years the chemical industry has known the toxic effects of many chemicals used in products today, but never revealed their studies to the public or to the government.
Here is a list of some commonly used personal care and dental hygiene products, and household cleaning products and the toxins contained in them:
DOVE BEAUTY BAR Quaternium 15; Formaldehyde-Carcinogen. Causes cancer, dermatitis, neurotoxin, and sensitizer - poisonous, irritant to the skin, eyes and mucous membranes. Butylated Hydroxytoluene, (BHT) Carcinogen.
JOHNSON'S BABY SHAMPOO Quaternium 15; FD&C RED 40: Carcinogen and causes dermatitis.
CREST TARTAR CONTROL TOOTHPASTE Saccharin: Carcinogen, contains Phenol. If you accidentally swallow more than a pea-sized amount of this, you must contact the Poison Control Center immediately. This warning does not appear on the tube!
TIDE AND CHEER DETERGENT Detergent: Can cause temporary respiratory tract irritation. Symptoms include stinging, swelling or redness. Sodium silicate: Can be corrosive. Can cause burns to the eyes and tissue damage to the skin, as well as cause burns to the mouth, throat and stomach if swallowed. Sodium Sulfate: Corrosive: Severe eye, skin and respiratory irritant. Can cause asthma attacks. Thisodium Nitrilotriacetate: Carcinogen Note: Tide powder contains fiberglass. If you use this and you are sweaty and itchy, it's the fiberglass in your clothing from the laundry detergent!
FANTASTIC Formula 409: Butyl Cellosolve: Neurotoxin. Eye and skin irritant. Damages central nervous system, kidney and liver. Readily absorbed through the skin. Damages blood and body's ability to make blood - listed as a pesticide.
WINDEX AEROSOL GLASS CLEANER Butyl Cellosolve (see above) Isobutene: Neurotoxin.
LYSOL DISINFECTANT Dioxin; Carcinogen, 500,000 times more deadly than DDT. Ethyl Alcohol: Eye, Skin, and respiratory tract irritant.
Just think about this statement: Funeral directors are now saying, "The levels of formaldehyde in our bodies have increased so much so that we now only use half the required amounts in preservation."
Each year nearly 1.5 million accidental ingestions of poisons are reported to U.S. Poison Control Centers. The majority of the victims are under the age of 12 and have swallowed a cleaning or personal care product.
What can you do to reduce your risks? By eliminating or reducing the use of toxic chemicals in your home you can make a significant difference in your life and the life of your family.

Deaths by Energy Drink, is it worth it?

The popular caffeinated 5-Hour Energy drink now has another, tragic number associated with it. As required by federal law, its distributor recently reported the caffeinated beverage’s possible involvement in 13 deaths. While the Food and Drug Administration is investigating, should BU students bypass 5-Hour Energy drinks available for purchase in University food stores?
“There is absolutely no need to reach for any of these products for energy,” declares Joan Salge Blake (SAR’84), a Sargent College clinical associate professor. Food provides ample energy for the body, she says.

Drove to Las Vegas, Nevada to attend the 2013 Yearly Launch for our company.
It was really crowded, they had to open the room and add more chairs, about 500 total! From what I hear the numbers grew dramatically from last year at this venue.
I had two guests, Jodi and Corey. They loved the information given and are now part of our Team!
Woo Hoo, WELCOME!!!! Let's ROCK 2013....
Our Company website was dramatically updated, giving us many new features.
Some new product lines were released, one of them a whole weight loss program!!!!
All in all it was a great Launch meeting and a great way to start the New Year!!!
